If you’re getting married at The Mill Barns and starting to think about your wedding cake, it really helps to see what works well in the space. The Mill Barns is the venue I work at most often, so I’ve created a lot of wedding cakes for couples getting married there over the years.
The main barn has such a lovely balance of rustic character and clean, modern styling. With the oak beams, soft neutral tones and natural light, it’s a venue that suits a wide range of wedding cake designs, from relaxed and rustic through to more elegant statement cakes.
Wedding cake sizes at The Mill Barns

Most couples at The Mill Barns choose a three tier wedding cake, usually a 6”, 8” and 10” setup. This size works really well in the main barn and comfortably serves around 120 guests without the cake feeling too big or too small for the space.
Some couples choose to go taller with a four tier cake, often to add height rather than extra portions, while others keep the main cake at three tiers and add extras such as favours or dessert elements alongside it.
Wedding cake styles that suit The Mill Barns

There isn’t one single style that works at The Mill Barns, which is part of what makes it such a great venue, but there are a few designs that couples are naturally drawn to.
Rustic and semi naked wedding cakes are especially popular for spring and summer weddings. Soft buttercream finishes, natural textures, neutral or autumn tones and florals look right at home in the barn, particularly when paired with a log cake stand.
For couples wanting something a little more refined, fully iced wedding cakes work beautifully too. Smooth white tiers, pearls, subtle texture and touches of gold sit really nicely against the clean lines of the barn and photograph so well in the main space.
Flowers and Personal touches

Flowers are a big part of many Mill Barns wedding cakes. Some couples use fresh flowers from their florist, while others choose sugar flowers made to match their bouquet or colour scheme. Cakes are always designed to tie in with the florals used throughout the day, rather than feeling like a separate element.
Personal details are something I see a lot with Mill Barns couples, and they’re often the bits people remember. This might be a subtle dog figure tucked into the design, initials or a monogram, or small details inspired by stationery or styling. These touches add personality while keeping the cake elegant and timeless.
Cake stands and Styling

The right cake stand can make such a difference. At The Mill Barns, log stands, hoop stands, acrylic tiers and statement stands can all work beautifully, depending on the cake design and overall styling. It’s something couples often ask about, and I’m always happy to help guide that choice.
Wedding cakes made around you

Every wedding cake I make is based around the couple. Some people come to me with a really clear idea of what they want, others have a general feel and want a bit of guidance. Either way, the aim is always the same, to create a wedding cake that feels personal, sits beautifully at The Mill Barns, and fits naturally into the day.
